"Free for All" Student exhibition opening 2pm Saturday 29 Oct

I passed the Digital Eyes Studio at 4 pm Friday, to see the group had finally got their act together, and presented a nice group of black and white photographs.

Working with groups of people, especially when there is not a lot of professionalism is always hard, so well done to Nicole and John for coordinating the process. Hopefully, the problems you encountered you will take with you in being better prepared for future exhibitions.

Next Friday will be our last class and I will focus on printing any outstanding work and there will be a conclusion talk. I will also we will need your work for the Frankston exhibition. We will conclude at 2pm. Any one who wants to stay on in the afternoon can do so. There will be no more printing after Friday.

Editing video using Canon 7D with Premier Pro CS5

Videos

It was good to see the varied approaches to the distortion assignment. There were some promising results. Well done to Mia and Gisella. Your videos worked particulary well.

Take onboard the various comments made at the screening and edit. This refining process is an important part of finishing the work. While it's a nice feeling to get the work done and out of the way, standards will rise in Sem. 2 and there is a requirement for a more finished result. You will be assessed on how flexible you are in engaging feedback and refining your work.

Issues of Sound:

If you are using music make sure it is copyright free or you have permission to use it. It is not acceptable to use a piece of copyrighted music, just because you like it and it helps your video. Sorry.

In some instances the music detracts from the artistic merit of the video. I encourage you to think of using sound effects (there are many free sites), voice over or a even some variation of sound level.

Those of you who didn't screen your work or who rushed it, there will be another screening and assessment of the videos in Semester 2 Tuesday 26 July (2nd Tuesday back).
Digital Painting:Please have your images ready for the first painting class next Semester. See the brief in Moodle.

Have a good break see you back on the Tuesday 19th July .

Colour Theory

Today we printed some HDR images. Worked on the tower and researched colour theory.

Itten's Color Theory
Color Contrasts
There are seven different kinds of contrasts.

1. Contrast of Hue
2. Light-Dark Contrast
3. Cold-Warm Contrast
4. Complementary Contrast
5. Simultaneous Contrast
6. Contrast of Saturation
7. Contrast of Extension

Keep in mind that no piece of artwork makes use of only one type of contrast. However one type is usually dominates the piece.

Contrast of Hue
A Hue colour is a pure colour. The further on the colour wheel colours are situated the greater the contrast.

Light Dark Contrast
Light dark contrast is contrast between light values and dark values.

"Chiaroscura"

Cold-Warm Contrast
Cold-warm contrast refers to the contrast between cool and warm colors. Cools colours consist of blue, green and purple. Warm colours consist of red, orange and yellow.

Complimentary Contrast
Complimentary Contrast refers to the contrast between complimentary (opposite) colours. Complimentary colors are those that are directly opposite to each other on the color wheel.

Simultaneous Contrast
It is the contrast between two colours that are almost complimentary, but not exactly. It is contrast between a colour and another colour that is to the right of left of its compliment.

Contrast of Saturation
The term refers to the contrast between pure intense colours and dull diluted or grayed colours. Dull colors would appear to be duller when it is placed next to pure intense colours, and pure intense colors would appear move vivid when it is next to a dull colour.

Contrast of Extension
Different amounts of one colour are needed to balance another.
The contrast of extension is used to refer to contrast between the proportion of one area of colour to another.

Finding oneself

Today we got the opportunity to listen to two young female artists talk about their work and the difficulties and challenges they face in finding funding and working on new projects, etc. They are both very talented and creative.

For those of you who came I think the talk would have helped you think about your own careers as artists or photographers. It was insightful.

To those who could not get out of bed or felt they had something more important to do, the year is slipping away quickly. Saying you are interested in art or have a passion for it and actually doing it are two different things. These opportunities slip by so quick and are gone.

What came across to me, is that the artists who spoke today are excited and inspired about what they do. It is meaningful. When something is meaningful it enriches you and you feel good.

I guess there are times when we are lost and we just follow the herd. It is easy to cover ourselves with apathy. Ultimately one has to find oneself. One has to face who one is. At what point do you make a decision what your life is going to be?

Ask yourselves 3 questions:

1) Who is my hero or person I look up to and admire?
2) How old am I?
3) What was that person doing at my age?

Invariably you will find you are capable of so much more NOW.

I think part of exploring who one is as an individual and as an artist is being open to new experience...and just being prepared to try. Don't be afraid of failing, that is how you learn.

Workshop

The workshop went very well. Thank you to those who attended. I think you will find it an amazing opportunity and lots of fun. The following people will now proceed with the project: Tom, Mia, Lauren and Jarryd. The rest of you who missed the workshop, Jenny feels its not suitable for you to participate. I'm dissapointed for you as you have missed out. It however, does highlight the need for you to be reliable and professional. Whatever kind of art career you follow, saying you will attend and then not turning up is not a good look, and people won't ask you again... so wise up. Best of luck to those who attended. I'm looking forward to seeing what you produce.... please remember your images must reach Jenny BY the 18 April.

Final Week & Point Leo Next week

Monday: Great to see the turn around in work yesterday well done! Most of you managed to complete the printing of the Hockney assignment despite issues with the printer. The proposals for the public art project, highlights how important to give your work time, if its rushed ,it makes it hard to get quality. Learn from this. Please remember copying and pasteing texts from google without referencing your sources is plagiarism. NOT acceptable at tertiary level. Some of you were getting good results the the map. Interesting, those people who embraced the idea of maps actually produced stronger work. so try to be open with the assignment and work with the ideas. The technician will make up some more stretchers. In future we will print first and then make the stretcher. NEXT WEEK: The artwork for Bright space 9X5 exhibtion can be handed in to staffroom by 3pm on Friday 7th April. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME AND TITLE IS CLEARLY WRITTEN ON BACK. See the handout of activities you can attend at Point Leo. This Thursday we hope to finish printing and complete video filming. Have a good break and I will see you on Monday 2nd May.

Clothes...identity maps...where we are from.

Suitcase ...maps....we are all travellers... identity

Identity related to shoes/maps/dresses

Artist: Tricia Mckellar

Map Assignment: This image uses several layers and textures in its design.

Monday is a public holiday. I've asked you to develop drawing and painting qualities to bring to class for next Monday to work with the Map assignment. This is essentially a drawing project that uses photoshop. Maps are drawings. so if you are going on a tangent and using photos of the globe/ earth..take a relook at the project. You will also be using many layers at least 20... so it will be about how you embed images. Also its about identity so don't get gimmicky with images..have some content.

For next Monday you NEED to have your proposal ready as a word document. Photos of the car park will be provided on Thursday.

A selection of 8 students for the De Gruchy projections will be made this Thursday.

Partial payment for SYDNEY is now URGENT... please show your receipt on Thursday.

Week 4 Excursion

MONDAY'S EXCURSION

It's great to see Tom's video of the visit to NGV, ACMI, Platform, Hosier lane and RMIT gallery.
You all should have plenty of imagery to work with for the second Hockney piece. Lunch was good too!

THURSDAY

Getting familiar with video cameras, capturing. Please read notes on Basic video.

Monday, February 28, 2011

Week 3: Hockney, Talking dogs and mixed media

On Monday we introduced the basics of working with the camera including Aperture, shutter speed, f stop, ISO, DOF, RAW, rule of thirds and a slight digression to the golden mean.

With the Hockney assignment we talked about the idea of "Variations of a theme" and continued with the assignment.

Public Art: Discussion using the De Bono's 6 hat theory, some interesting questions such as "If dogs could talk what would change?" If you find yourself looking at problen solving with one approach..this may help you think is a more flexible way.

There is some urgency in developing the proposal for the Nocturnal Project.. Please type up your proposal in Word and email to me asap. The Public Art assignment gives a break down of the headings for the proposal.

Basic demonstration of using drawing materials ..you are asked to develop the drawings as set in the assignment.

PLEASE NOTE:

NEXT MONDAY: we meet at National gallery of Victoria at 10 am THIS is an ALL DAY EXCURSION PLEASE BRING A CAMERA to complete the second Hockney assignment.

The following Monday (14th March) is a PUBLIC HOLIDAY. NO class.

Amazing Fire Animation!

Week Two: Introduction of Public Art Project.

video installation

It's good to see some of you have started putting together ideas for the 'Fire' Video. Learning to "push" ideas/ concepts takes time so try to keep at it. The ability to problem solve and think with creative solutions impacts on how you look at and live life.

There was a good start with the David Hockney assignment. We will work on this next week.

Make sure you have all your ideas and resources (images) plus art materials for next week. you will need them to develop the MAP assignment.

Please make sure you've read the Student handbook info on Moodle. Please also read the studio etiquette info.
